ENMAX Announces Changes to Commercial and Industrial Contracts in Alberta.

September 2024

ENMAX is making significant adjustments to their service offerings for commercial and industrial customers in Alberta, particularly those with high energy consumption. These changes will affect businesses across the province, prompting a shift in energy procurement strategies for many large-scale consumers.

Key Changes to ENMAX's Commercial and Industrial Contracts

ENMAX has announced that while it will continue to honor all current and future contracts through their end dates, it will no longer offer auto-renewal or new contracts to large commercial and industrial customers. Specifically, businesses consuming more than 250,000 kWh of electricity or 2,500 GJ of natural gas annually will not be eligible for new agreements with ENMAX once their current contracts expire. These customers will need to transition to alternative energy suppliers to meet their future energy needs.

Ongoing Operations for Residential and Regulated Rate Customers

Despite these changes, ENMAX has clarified that it remains fully operational and solvent. Residential customers, as well as those on the Regulated Rate Option (RRO), will continue to receive uninterrupted service. ENMAX’s EasyMax program, which provides fixed-rate contracts to residential customers, will also continue as usual. Customers in these segments can expect the same level of service and support without disruption.

What This Means for Alberta Businesses Currently Served by ENMAX

All existing contracts will be honored through their expiration dates, and no customers will be dropped as a result of these changes. However, ENMAX will not be offering renewal pricing for contracts nearing their end, nor will it add new Site ID’s to existing agreements. Options such as "blend and extend" (which allows businesses to modify and extend contracts) may not be available. Additionally, businesses with dropped sites due to late payments are unlikely to be re-enrolled, potentially leading to exit fees.

For Alberta businesses affected by these changes, Wholesale Energy—a consulting firm that partners with multiple energy suppliers—remains available to assist in securing competitive rates from alternative providers. Their team continues to manage all existing accounts and is prepared to guide businesses through the transition process.

To ensure the best possible energy rates, Wholesale Energy recommends businesses provide a copy of their latest bill and contract end date. The competitive nature of the Alberta energy market ensures that businesses can still secure favorable rates moving forward.
